Until 10pm is normal
Today, new joiners including me have a face to face session with our boss. He mentioned that anything that discussed in this room will be in the room after the meeting. Hmmm…
I remember the first question he asked was “What is the first impression of you on this company’s culture?” Someone said “working late!” Hahahaha.. I smiles but I agreed with the guy who mentioned that.
Guess what my boss’s answer. He said “In IT lines as this company is, people work from 9am to 10pm everyday is normal.” Arhhh ??
BUT, it is true that my colleagues work until 1 or 2am almost everyday!

there’s 2 ending working in this company, 1 - work like a mad cow; 2 - relax til bored…
so, i guess v both r the 1st type..
keeyit || Which department can be so relax till bored?? Tell me.. I want to change department.. Hahaha
Wait till you work in an advertising agency.
keeyit || Ohh.. really ?
I think that generally is a pathetic culture of Asian countries
keeyit || Yes, I agreed… Just wonder why we can do like what western countries do now?
yup i agree with what ur boss say…. Ru in programming line? if u in programming line….. i think maybe 1 week stay at office leh
if got project 2 rush
keeyit || Ohh God.. no no no…
I don’t work until that late, but am on call 24×7
keeyit || Oh no.. so far do you need to attend any services on midnight?
It’s okay as long as there’s overtime pay haha!!
keeyit || No OT !!!
Wah.. no life lah like that
keeyit || Definitely no life…
How come so late? Not efficiency at all la.. aiks
keeyit || Sigh.. It is the planning issue.. Not efficiency? Yeah, I guess one of the factors too
what a slave driver!
keeyit ||
Bad hor?
That’s not true. Our office hours is 9-5, and most of us leave on time, but of course when critical issue, everyone willing to stay back lar.
keeyit || Everyday when I left office, I still see people working there. I left office around 830pm. I heard that they work till 2am. Everyday also got critical stuffs????
my IT colleagues oso like dat… next time bring camp into the office lah …
keeyit || Oh no.. I don’t want…
oh yes, i totally agree with wat your boss said. In IT line, it’s really very common that you need to work late.
keeyit || Sigh…
your boss is from India ah???… no offense, so far people / management from India, they expect their staff to work like this.
keeyit || No, my boss is malaysian.. But I agreed with you that India people expect people work late as I engage with them for project now.
Hmmmm… I was just thinking about this question a couple of days back.
I just flipped the channel and realized that the cantonese series on TV3 are still playing at 6pm. I remembered when I first joined the workforce, I was able to reach home by 6pm to catch the series…
Now, I’m glad that if I can reach home by 9pm.
We’re working longer hours and that may not necessarily be very productive. We are prone to mistakes and accidents. And, the amount of hours we put in, not necessarily gives us more $$$ or happiness.
If you’re in an MNC where you need to communicate with your overseas counterparts (the joy of globalization..), you usually have to stay in the office for those late night conference calls.. uggghhh…
Time to strike a balance!! I would support some kind of work structure where you can take flexi hours. It is madness to get your staff to work > 12hrs a day just because you need to fulfill two criteria - Malaysian working hours AND overseas working hours.
keeyit || Maybe you are manager or senior then your workload is high. But for me, I just junior le.. also got to work till so late lol.. I agreed that dealing with other countries got the timezone different that we may have to stay back late.. Even through my company got flexi hours but too bad seem everyone comes to work early and back late..
Crazy working hours!!! Like that no space for personal life. Not my cup of tea. I dont understand why must work till so late.
keeyit || Actually I also do not know why I need to work so late..
Work until so late? Got OT or not?
keeyit || No OT la…
ITs ALL IN YOUR MIND~
true, Asian and American countries bosses thinks that way, they feel like they pay you this much is expecting you to work very late and sacrifice all your time to the company as much as they had. Well, this is a bad culture in my thinking, it just pushes everyone to become workaholics and creating more while collar mental stress related diseases~ it’s sick~
If I were there, I would ask the boss, “what for you put the working hours as 9-6pm, why don’t you put 9-9pm so that no one feels bad about working late?” (ofcourse the bosses couldn’t because it is AGAINST the labour law~
keeyit || We have the same thought BUT too bad I cant do anything but just follow the order.
